  • The Romans called Pécs Sopianæ and founded several wine-producing colonies under that name in the early 2nd century.
  • Sopianae became an important Christian city. Archiological digs have discovered first Christian cemeteries, dating back to the 4th century.
  • The Benedictine order was the first of several religious orders to take root in Pécs.
  • King Louis the Great founded the University of Pécs New Window in 1367.
  • Janus Pannonius, one of the most important mediaeval poets of Hungary, became the bishop of Pécsin 1459.
  • According to the first census held in 1787 there was a total of 8853 residents, of which 133 were priests and 117 were noblemen.
  • Zsolnay Porcelain in Pécs is a world famous porcelain factory.
